by Rob Secker Jun 16, 2008 Today was a joke. 36 miles. That feels like nothing now. We spend almost as much time packing the trailer and eating as we do riding on short days like these. Besides being easy on the legs short days have other advantages. You don't feel rushed to get out of the sun or to arrive at your hosts location. You can ride slow or take long rest stops. Today was really cloudy. Not very scenic but at least we weren't sweating buckets. Our route today took us through an experimental wind farm. If you've never seen a wind farm up close I highly encourage you to go out to one. Trent, Evan and I took a detour down a dirt road (it might have been trespassing) to look at some up close. Amazing. These things are huge. From afar they look like they're spinning quite slowly, only about 1 revolution every 5 seconds. But when you see that the blades are about 100 feet long you realize that that's incredibly fast. Evan and I are mechanical engineering students and Trent used to be an aerospace engineering student so naturally we did some napkin calculations. I won't bore you with details but we figured the blade tip moved at about 80 to 90 mph. After a 3 mile race between me and Trent (he won by jumping out in front and staying there the whole time) we rolled into town and ate at a pizza buffet here in Buffalo. Currently I'm in the computer lab at the local school. I'll have to end my blog now because we have a limited time here in the lab. Also I wont be able to report on stuff that might happen later. It's only 2:46 pm. Usually I don't write about stuff until nearly bed time or the next day. I don't know when I'll have a internet access next so I figured I'd write about all this now while it's fresh in my head. On that note, I foresee internet access to diminish quickly once we reach the Rockies. Sorry if I don't post as much or as often in a few weeks. PS Oklahoma is much prettier than Texas. I like Texas and all...but it's much more colorful here. The soil is a rich brown red, the fields are filled with a yellow wheat and the skies have been mostly blue. When they're not blue they're burnt orange and pink from the sun setting. Don't worry Texas, I'm still gunna come back.
