Why I Ride

I ride for my grandmother who fought and beat breast cancer. My mother had just started college at Ohio State when she was informed that her mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer, after already losing her grandmother to breast cancer. I never really imagined I would be able to understand the situation she was in, but standing in her shoes when she found out, I can only imagine how heartbreaking the situation was. Though I am beyond grateful to not be in my mother’s situation, there are others who aren’t so lucky, and I ride for them.

I ride for my cousin Claire, who fought and beat cancer when she was only 4 years old. Experiencing something as traumatic and intense as cancer and cancer treatment is life changing regardless of your age, yet having to do so while still a child is incomprehensible. The toll it took on her and her family is something no mother and father should ever have to worry about with their four year old daughter.

I ride for my sister and my mother. Though they are both thankfully cancer free, the last three generations of women on my mother’s side of the family have been diagnosed with breast cancer. No matter how well they look after themselves, how healthy and active they stay, I may get a call someday breaking the bad news. I ride to make sure that if that day ever comes, it will not be the end.
