Cyclists ride cross country for cancer research

Gundersen Health System welcomed 27 cyclist from the University of Texas Friday. The students are part of a non-profit organization called Texas 4000. The group is one of three groups riding across the country to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for cancer.

The charity ride was founded by a cancer survivor who didn’t let his disease keep from finding his inner strength.

“He just wanted to show no struggle is insurmountable and the way we do that, and the way we join our fight and fight for our loved ones is by doing something that seems impossible,” said cyclist, Mark Jons.

Many of the riders are either riding for someone with cancer or are cancer survivors themselves. On their visit, they were able to meet with members from “A Bump in the Road,” a cancer patient and survivor support group.

“It’s very emotional to hear their personal stories, to share our stories with them. I mean they gave a story and everyone tears up. All of us back here were listening, and hugging each other and crying because we can relate with those stories,” said Molly Quinn, a mentor in the support group.

The group will head to Rochester before continuing their journey all the way to Anchorage, Alaska.
