About: I was born Shawn Matthew Walker on September 8, 1982 in Zachary, Louisiana. However, I grew up in Upstate New York in a town called Oswego. In May '05 I graduated from Southern Vermont College with a BA in Creative Writing. Since then I've been drifting about, avoiding the transition into the real world. In September '05 I quit my job and rode in a charity bike ride called Plea for Peace (www.pleaforpeace.com). Fifteen riders rode 1,500 miles down the west coast, from Olympia, WA to San Diego, CA. We rode to raise money to build a youth center in San Jose, CA to give kids a place to display, perform and share their art and music. I also rode to challenge myself mentally and physically. I rode to see how resilient I could be. Since that ride, I've become inspired to ride my bicycle for charity, fun, transportation and fitness. Aside from cycling, I like to simply relax, surround myself with friends, share some laughter and be positive.

Why I Ride

When I first heard about Texas 4000 I was initially excited about the idea of cycling to Alaska. Once the excitment wore off I was able to examine the cause, what it stood for, and what I was going to be a part of. This ride will challenge me in many of the same ways as Plea for Peace did, but what PFP didn't do was bring me to the people I was raising money for. Cancer hurts individuals, and I am glad I will get to meet these people to hear their stories. It will help us all see not WHAT we are raising money for, but for WHO. Personally, I am riding for my grandfather Walker, who died of lung cancer, and my kindergarten teacher Mrs. A, who died of breast cancer, when I was only five years old. Sadly I was too young to fully remember or appreciate them, but their existence, influence and love should not be ignored simply because my memory doesn't remember that far back. I also ride for everyone I will meet along the way and those I will never meet. Be strong.
