About:
I’m Jackie and I’m from Sugar Land, a suburb of Houston. I am the youngest of my family with two amazing older siblings James and Ren-yo, a superhero mom who can do anything, and a dad with a knack for bad jokes. Growing up in the suburbs, the closest thing to the great outdoors was the little stretch of greenery behind our yard, which was the site of many great adventures. As a kid I went through a bug phase when I was obsessed with insects and wanted to be an entomologist. That passion of mine has since faded; now the nasty little critters mostly just make me cringe. Insects aside, life and nature still fascinate me. I’m majoring in biology and “minoring” in Spanish, and I really love what I’m learning.
Why I Ride
The results of the tissue biopsy revealed it was benign. That lump in my mother's breast, however strange and out of place it was, wasn't cancerous. In that moment all that doubt and worry, all those hours of anxiety and dread were washed away with that single word- benign. Life could go back to normal; everything was okay. For us it was only a brush of fear, but I know that many are not so fortunate. My mother's results were not simply a cause for joy but more so a call for action. Texas 4000 is my opportunity to do what I can in my power to push forward the frontiers of cancer research, so we may better understand this ailment and improve treatments for all our loved ones that are fighting cancer. Because every day so many mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers out there are diagnosed with cancer, and they mean the world to their family and friends. I want to be a part of this organization to spread word about prevention and early detection- so we may find fewer lumps and bumps and have better chances if we do. But most of all, I want this crazy bike ride to let people affected by cancer know that we are rooting for them and they aren't alone in their fight.
