About:
Describing a person or one’s self is nearly as hard as describing a song, because like music, we sound and feel different to each person we meet. I am, by nature, a passionate person and I tend to throw all of myself into the things I do. I am an avid soccer player, a lover of nature, a friend to many, a brother, a son, a musician, a chemical engineer(hopefully), a fan of late night strolls, a longhorn, a reader, a son of God, and a human being. I love meeting new people, and trying new things. I graduated from Brazoswood High School, but spent most of my life in Rockwall, Texas. I have never lived outside of this great state of Texas, and if I never do, that would be just fine with me.
Why I Ride
Cancer is one of those things that we always hear about and pray never to experience. During my junior year in high school, my Grandfather was diagnosed with kidney cancer. I remember the fear and questions that followed, and the way it affected me. My grandfather was profoundly lucky and won his battle with the help of early detection and wonderful care. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for all of those who undertake that battle.
Another person in my life who was not so lucky was a man by the name of Spencer Green. Spencer was a musician who frequently played at church camps, sometimes traveling to local communities to spread his music. When he did this, he didn’t book large auditoriums, he simply came to people’s homes, asking for nothing more than a place to sleep and some money for gas. I, along with many of my friends, was profoundly impacted by his music and story. Spencer Green fought and overcame cancer on four separate occasions, finally succumbing to it during his fifth battle with it. What was so inspirational about him was that ne never gave up, and never stopped fighting. On the one occasion I was lucky to meet him, it was truly great to see what a positive outlook he had on life, and what great things he had to say. He never sought to find glory or fame with his music, only to spread his faith in God, his hope, and his love of life. Seeing his passion for music and his love for everyone around him was simply too much not to impact every single person that he encountered. When Spencer passed away, the entire church was filled with people whom he had touched in his short life, a testament to the things he accomplished in the face of incredible obstacles.
It is terrible when one realizes just how many people cancer affects, be that those who fight the disease, the people who are left alone when cancer claims life, or those who are left to stand beside others in their time of grieving. The fight on cancer is one that we all must join together in if we ever hope to overcome it.
